small grants:


Small grants of £1,000 have been made available to community groups doing work that benefits the community. The small grants fund has been operating since 2001 and some really great work has been funded. Grants are provided by Neighbourhood Renewal and are awarded by a Panel made up of local residents. Here is a list of grants awarded in the last year:


In May 2007 the Panel awarded grants to:

  • Lifeskills: awarded £876. Lifeskills safety education and training programme. They organise trips to their Create Centre site for pupils of St Nicholas of Tolentine and Easton primary.

  • Streets Alive: awarded £1,000. This project is to support the current street parties so that they may happen again. They will be employing a local person to undertake a planning and consultation role as well as the aspiration to start new street parties further across the Easton area.

  • Mivart Artists: awarded £1,000. Open Studio Workshop programme to fund a series of workshops and demonstrations during studio weekend in Oct 07.

  • Awaz Utaoh: awarded £1,000. To fund five all day cross cultural faith foods awareness and cooking workshops.

  • Bristol Pakistani Community Welfare Organisation: awarded £1,000. Shopfront improvement Project.

  • Space Trust: awarded £478. A furniture recycle initiative. The money is for leaflets to promote the service. All the furniture is given to the homeless for free.


In August 2007 the Panel awarded grants to:

  • BCESG Pauline Weiss Annual Achievement Awards: awarded £900. Awards ceremony held at City Academy to recognise achievement in black and ethnic minority young people.

  • Holding Refugees and Human Rights in Mind 'Skills for Integration': awarded £1,000. An organisation assisting asylum seekers and refugees.

  • Bridging the Gaps in the Community 'Black History Month Reading Group': awarded £990. An organisation that meets the cultural needs of African Caribbean and dual heritage children 7-11yrs. They are working with two schools in the Easton area, encouraging literacy and understanding of black history.

  • Kebele Basic Bicycle Maintenance: awarded £900. Workshops. Working with young people.

  • Milsom Street Party: awarded £1,000. Street party in Milsom Street.


In November 2007 the Panel awarded grants to:

  • Dhek Bhal Carers Project: awarded £975. Workshops for carers on Pilates and Creative Skills.

  • Sikh Resource Centre Healthy Food Awareness Workshops: awarded £900. Payment of cooker for site premises.

  • Black Carers Project: awarded £650. A trip to the relaxation centre for carers.

  • Community Clinic 'Well Being in The Community': awarded £845. A free event at Easton Community Centre to raise awareness of benefits of holistic treatment, including sample food, taster treatments, fitness sessions and intro to allotments, growing vegetables, children's yoga and permaculture.

  • Here and Now "Solstice" (Baljinder Bhopal): awarded £1,000. Art piece under railway bridge next to Coach House Pub. Winter landscape with snow stencils done by two local schools. Also spoken word celebration.

  • Friends of Fox Park Gateways Project: awarded £1,000. Gateway entrances at either end of Fox Park Rd commissioned by a local artist.

  • Toc H 'Central Bristol detached Youth Work Team': awarded £1,000.
    Multi agency project with locally recruited people addressing problems around 'Goodpenny Island' area. Part of ongoing work.

  • Bristol Wireless 'Community Connections': awarded £1,000. Build a free to access wireless computer network into areas around Bannerman Rd. This will mean free internet access around this particular area. Three black and minority ethnic households will receive free reconditioned computers.


In Jan 2008 the Panel awarded grants to:

  • Kebele Permaculture Collective "Workshops and Workdays 2008": awarded £984. A number of workdays for Easton Community Orchard at Royate Hill Allotments. For materials to upkeep apple trees, grow fruits and vegetables and for involving further volunteers. Further workshops on pruning apple trees and green wood working.

  • St Judes Estate Agreement "St Judes Community Room": awarded £580. To renovate the community room with equipment and furniture.

  • Publicity for Easton Arts Trail Weekend: awarded £1,000. To pay to publicize the event, brochures and materials to be sent city wide.

  • Bridging the Gaps in the Community "World Book Readathon 2008": awarded £1,000. Working with two schools in Easton; providing a range of activities including poetry; an illustrator session, themed storytelling with characters and fables from parents.

  • Easton Community Children's Centre: awarded £557. For materials and supplies including toys, books etc.

  • Castle Green Babies and Toddlers Group based in Kingsley Group: awarded £700. For materials and supplies including toys, books etc.

  • Youthful Yoga: awarded £425. Free Yoga to teenagers/families at Easton Community Centre.

£5,246 awarded in total.


All the small grants fund has now been spent.
